circus silkscreens
Sorry I haven't been posting a whole lot lately but I've been super busy. I've been working on some pretty cool things, and hopefully I'll be able to post them in the near future.
Anyway,I did these silkscreens a while back for a gallery show I had here in Cleveland. I tried to capture the feeling of the illustrations I loved so much as a kid-keeping the colors a little more muted and dark. Mixing ink for silkscreening is still kind of a guessing game for me. The colors always darken considerably when dry, so I never know exactly how it will look until the last color is applied.
The lion and the zebra were done in editions of thirty, and I made twenty of the larger circus tents. There are still some available.

Wow, classic and completely classy. The use of flat colours to determine shapes is so captivating and underused, but you've mastered it completely. I love Zebra Girl in particular!
Awesome. I love these. So great that these are available as silkcreens.
Great result. Love the color.
Michael, these are incredible. You've really managed to capture the look of mid-century children's book illustrations. I'm not sure which is my favorite, I love them all.

These are gorgeous, Michael. Magnificent colors. Would love to have the circus tents on my wall.
I love these Michael! I love how the textures turned out and the borders around the illustrations really add character to the overall feel.
Really great works! :)
Hi Michael!
Genial!I love it!
Abraços do Brasil!
The lion is fantastic, but the last is my favorite. It´s the whole circus there! And the colors are perfect!
Magnificent! Whether by accident or intention the muted colour palette really does have that retro 50's kids book feel to it. I'm in awe that these are 'real world' hand prints and not the 'safe' world of digital. Makes me want to take the plunge too. Have you bought all the kit, and recommendations on do's and don'ts of how to start...?I wonder, did you work out the design and separations in digital first...?
Thanks so much for buying a copy of the book. I really hope you find it worth the wait! Let me have your postal address via my website "contact" email. There's something I'd like to send you sir.
My wife and I love how your digital illustrations have a "print" quality to them and now to see these silk screens is such a treat! Keep up the great work:)
I love these! Great colours and styling.
Super duper awesome, Michael! I am so late to visit, but I am floored by this. Gorgeous, gorgeous work!!
